Unlocking potential and building business, often resurrecting and restoring their value, in the metals industry has been my career focus since the day I graduated from University of Washington in 1981.
My most ambitious venture has been leading Metro Metals to become the largest industrial-based metals recycling company in the region. Since becoming CEO at age 24, I've overseen the company's growth from one truck and one part-time employee to 165 trucks and 600 employees today with locations throughout the Western United States.
This success reflects revolutionary changes made with Co-Owner and Executive Vice President, Steve Zusman, to systems and technology as well as mergers that upended the status quo. Our company today plays an essential role in turning "waste" from metals and increasingly electronic materials into a new resource instead of being sent to landfill. I’m incredibly proud of our reputation for responsible, honest business and environmental performance that often goes beyond regulatory requirements.
Portland gave my family the opportunity to pursue the American Dream as refugees from WWII and I owe the city and its people for providing a nurturing community for Metro Metals to flourish. I do my best to give back and support other entrepreneurs to pursue their dreams here too. I believe that education is the pathway to success in business and in life, which is why I’m a proud member today of the Horatio Alger Association where I support promising scholars throughout the country to reach their highest educational potential.

From copper to aluminum and gold to steel, the metals trade has been my life’s work and that of the Zusman family since we first opened our business in Portland, Oregon in 1965. When we merged with Winkler Metals to create MetroMetals Northwest in 1991, we never could have imagined it would grow to become the largest industrial-based metals recycling company in the region. Today our sales of ferrous and non-ferrous metals as well as growing materials recovered from electronics stretch across the US and to markets worldwide.
As Executive Vice President and co-owner, I’ve steered the company's growth from one truck and one part-time employee to 165 trucks and 600 employees today with state-of-the-art facilities throughout the Western United States. Our success reflects revolutionary changes we made to systems and technology as well as mergers that upended the status quo.
Trade in non-ferrous metals is my particular expertise. I’m known as an honest broker with deep market knowledge and experience and an ability to lead transactions in an operating environment known for its volatility. Many of my business relationships span decades, a testament to my trusted reputation and the excellence I’ve always demanded of myself and my team.
